The Cohen

The Cohen is a 60" × 60" Black Walnut dining table built around a design brought directly to me by the clients. With a clear vision already in mind—including a steel base selected from Flowyline Design—we collaborated to translate their concept into a functional, lasting piece while preserving the distinctive look they envisioned. The oversized square top was constructed from dimensional Black Walnut lumber, with wide channels carefully routed into the surface and each rounded corner shaped and refined by hand.

After creating multiple epoxy samples with the clients to dial in the right color, the channels were poured in a custom gray tone to provide a bold contrast against the Walnut. At five feet square, the top also presented some unique challenges throughout the build. Once the epoxy work was complete, the final flattening had to be performed entirely by hand with a large hand plane because the assembled top was too large for my slab-flattening equipment. The finished top was then fitted to the clients’ chosen base, bringing their original vision together with the craftsmanship and construction necessary to turn it into a functional statement piece.
